The Rainforest

Hello everyone! Welcome back to Environment Kids. We are going to be talking about the rainforest! The rainforest is a very special place. It provides most of the worlds medicine and part of the worlds food and spices. They also provide air, water, and shelter to rainforest animals. It even provides some of the worlds cash crops.

Medicine

As I mentioned earlier the rainforest provides most of the worlds medicine. Medicines that the rainforest provides are Quinine, Vincristine, Vinblastine, Physostigmine Cortisone, and even Tubocurarine. These medicine can treat malaria, babesiosis, leukemia, lymphoma, neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor, glaucoma, relaxants in surgery. As I said the rainforest holds much of the medicine on Earth.

Food

The rainforest holds many foods, spice, and nuts. The fruits that are supplied by the rainforest are avocados, bananas, coconuts, figs ( Have you had a fig? If so post it in the comments below.),  grapefruit, guava, lemons, mango, oranges, pineapples, and tomatoes. Vegetables include, corn, potatoes, rice, winter squash, and yams. Spices include black pepper, cayenne, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, sugar, cane, turmeric, vanilla, chocolate. Finally, we have the nuts. Not very many nuts come from the rainforest but those that do are worth mentioning. We have the Brazilian nut or the cashew. The rainforest provides tons of food to the world.

Shelter

Rainforests provide shelter to all the animals that live their. Such animals include Capybara, the Emerald Tree Boa, Okapi, Gorilla, Macaw, Orangutan, Jaguar, the Poison Dart Frog, and the sloth. Thank goodness we have the rainforests to protest these animals.

 Cash Crops

The rainforest provides many crops to the rest of the world. The list of cash crops is a very long list. including coffee, cacao, maize, tapioca, pineapple, sweet potatoes, jute (What is a jute? Say in the comments.), heart of palm, guaranà, black pepper, brazil nut, and soybean.

I hope that you know see how use full rainforests are. They provide humans with medicines, food, and cash crops. They provide animals with homes and shelter. Anyway,  I'll see you next time on Environment Kids!
